Morning Briefing: What Happened at the Reservoir?

Here's what's happening in Canton this Thursday.

1. Weather: Severe weather is on the horizon, says the National Weather Service. After the fog burns off at 8 a.m., showers and thunderstorms will roll in. Some of the thunderstorms could be severe. The high today will be 77 degrees, followed by a low tonight of 54. Thunderstorms will persist until 2 a.m. Friday.

2. In Case You Missed It: The Cherokee Sheriff's Office arrested two armed robbery suspects thanks to the keen eyes of a shop worker. Deputies recovered a handgun and some cash from the suspects' vehicle.

3. Happening Now: Canton Police are investigating the drowning death of a 17-year-old man at the Hickory Log Creek Reservoir yesterday. The young man's body was discovered by divers at approximately 5 p.m. Wednesday evening, more than three hours after the original call came in.

5. On This Date in History: On April 11, 1945, American troops liberate the Buchenwald concentration camp in Germany. As more and more death camps, concentration camps, and labor camps are discovered and liberated by Allied forces, the full scope of Nazi crimes against humanity finally comes into focus. It is estimated that over 56,000 people died in Buchenwald between 1937 and 1945.
