5. On This Date in History: On Feb. 20, 1942, naval aviator Edward "Butch" O'Hare singlehandedly shot down three Japanese bombers attempting to destroy the aircraft carrier USS Lexington. O'Hare's heroism earned him the Medal of Honor, but he was killed in a night mission on Nov. 26, 1943. O'Hare Airport in Chicago is named after him.
