On This Date in History: On March 12, 1938, German troops occupy Austria to prevent a plebiscite that would have determined whether or not Austrians wanted to remain independent of the Nazis in Berlin. A sham plebiscite is carried out on April 10, and 99.7 percent of Austrian voters "support" unity with Germany. The so called "Anschluss," or union, between the two countries would not be broken until April 27, 1945.
