5. On This Date in History: On April 1, 1826, inventor Samuel Morey is issued a patent for a "vapor engine," the grandfather of the internal combustion engine. Morey's design proved to be more complex and less efficient than other engines in development, and he never received any financial backing for a machine that would revolutionize the world. Internal combustion engines would not be mass produced until the 1860s.
