5. On This Date in History: On March 27, 1915, Mary Mallon is put into permanent quarantine at a hospital on North Brother Island in New York. Mallon, who had worked as a cook for years, unwittingly gave all her employers' families typhoid fever, which killed several people. Mallon was determined to be a healthy "carrier" of the disease, the first such case recorded in America. As a result, "Typhoid Mary" was locked away on North Brother Island until her death in 1938.
