Retired WSB-TV anchor Monica Pearson will serve as the guest speaker of the breakfast, sponsored by the Cherokee County government and Woodstock-based Allen Temple United Methodist Church.

The breakfast will be held between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, at the Northside Hospital-Cherokee Conference Center in Canton. The event is free and open to the public.

Pearson retired in July 2012 after spending 37 years as an anchor for Channel 2 Action News.

Its goal is to not only recognize the legacy of most respected civil rights leader in American history, the breakfast is also designed to "promote unity in the Cherokee County community," according to a press release.

The event also pulls in a diverse audience from various racial, political social and religious backgrounds across the county. The celebration also highlights the MLK Scholarship Fundraiser and the MLK Unity Award.

Established in 1999 by Allen Temple Pastor Carl A. Moore Sr., the award recognizes the contributions of a person in the community who has made a positive impact by promoting "harmonious racial and cultural relations."

The application deadline is December 30. See the attached .PDF to nominate someone for the award.
