Liberty ES Raising Money for Animal Shelter

The change drive is designed to cover a portion of the adoption fee at the Cherokee County Animal Shelter.

Liberty Elementary School Students are raising money for the Cherokee County Animal Shelter, and hope to save up to 850 animals from euthanasia.

Liberty students will be donating change as part of the “Pennies for Puppies and  Coins for Kittens” campaign. The money raised by the students will cover the $23.53 portion of the animal shelter's adoption fees from June to August, 2013.

"We would like to take on such a worthy cause to give back to our community," said Liberty's Stacy Yawn.

The Cherokee County Animal Shelter, which is in the running for the 2013 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge, tries to save as many animals as they can through spaying and neutering, education, and worming shots. The shelter depends on community donations to survive and continue to provide excellent service for the county's residents and its animals.

Liberty's commitment to animals won't stop once the contest ends, either; Yawn and fellow educator Julie Robbins plan to set up a Homeless Pet Club at the school this fall with the cooperation of the animal shelter.

"We have lots of ideas to support this initiative," Yawn said.
