Come September, No Cash in Water Fund

1. At Thursday night's meeting, the discussed, but made no decision on water rates. Instead, the council voted to table the discussion so that it has more time to investigate alternatives such as a possible merger with the Cherokee County Water and Sewerage Authority. If the city makes no headway with the authority in the next 30 days, Mayor Gene Hobgood said he would support a hike. The vote and Hobgood's comments followed a Power Point presentation from council member Bill Bryan that showed:

  • Expenses exceed revenues at a rate of $2 million a year in the water and sewer fund.
  • There will be no available cash in the fund as of Sept. 1, the day the city must pay a $1.5 million debt.

For that reason, he proposed a 23 percent rate hike by May 1 or a 29 percent increase by June 1. For the minute-by-minute blow of Thursday's meeting, including an increase in fees at the city's trash collection site, go .

2. The Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce will be closed today for Good Friday, the day in which Christians observe the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. Class is in session for students. It's business as usual in and government offices, too.
