Update: Schools Make Decision on Thursday Classes, February Break

Canton officials are urging residents to stay off the icy roads Wednesday.

Cherokee County school officials have canceled classes for Thursday, Feb. 13, no word yet on Friday. But, district leaders said that next week's February Break will go on as planned.

From Cherokee County School Board:

The Superintendent has closed Cherokee County schools and offices for Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014 due to current conditions and National Weather Service forecasts.  Stay tuned to local news stations, the school system's social media channels (Twitter and Facebook) and the CCSD website at www.cherokee.k12.ga.us for updates relative to any subsequent school closing announcement for Friday, Feb. 14, 2014.

In response to inquiries about possible make-up days for students: there will not be classes during next week’s planned February Break. School district staff will with work with the Georgia Department of Education as it relates to options for making up the instructional time lost this semester.

While current state board policy in this regard allows for four lost instructional days due to inclement weather, we are hearing that additional allowances may be sought through the State Board of Education due to two different “State of Emergency” declarations.  Thank you for your patience during this review process.

The Canton Emergency Operations Center says that crews are tackling icy streets.

"Please be advised that Cherokee Street is closed. City Public Works are responding as quickly as possible to treat primary and secondary roads.

All Canton city offices are closed today, and Municipal Court has been rescheduled for Feb. 19 at 9 a.m.

Tuesday night warming shelters were opened at Canton First Baptist Church and Action Church. Workers from the Red Cross, emergency management officials, the public health department and church members staffed the shelters.
