Canton Police Offers Halloween Safety Tips

The agency is offering residents these tips as they head out for trick-or-treating tonight in Canton.

As you head out to do your trick-or-treating tonight, the Canton Police Department wants you to take note of some safety precautions:

  • Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors. Since masks can sometimes obstruct a child’s vision, try non-toxic face paint and makeup whenever possible.
  • Have kids use glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.
  • Children under the age of 12 should not be alone at night without adult supervision. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, remind them to stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in groups.
  • Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. so be especially alert for kids during those hours.
  • When selecting a costume make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls.
  • Plan your entire route and make sure your family knows what it is.
  • Make sure that you are wearing a flame retardant costume.
  • Wait until you get home and your parents check your candy before you eat it.
  • Be very cautious of strangers.
  • Accept treats only in the doorway. Never go inside a house.
  • Visit only houses where the lights are on.
  • Walk on sidewalks and driveways.
  • Cross the street at the corner or in a crosswalk.
  • Take a cellular phone with you and report any suspicious activity and concerns.
The agency will begin bike and on-foot patrols throughout neighborhoods and subdivisions around 2 p.m. and will last throughout the evening. If you see anything or anyone suspicious, the agency encourages residents to call 911.
