Cherokee Delays New Lathemtown Library

The library was slated to be built in eastern Cherokee County and cost around $5.6 million to build.

A proposal to build a new library in eastern Cherokee County has been postponed. Cherokee County Commissioners on Tuesday voted 4-1 to postpone moving forward to construct a new library on the corner of Highway 20 and Old Mill Road in the Lathemtown community. Commissioner Harry Johnston voted against postponing the library.  The board also will reach out to the Cherokee County legislative delegation to see if the library system can be the first to receive the next round of state funding. The project was slated to cost about $5.3 million to build and will be about 18,000 square feet. Cherokee County has to give $3.6 million for construction costs and find another $300,000 to fund operations on an annual basis. Susan White, the director of …

Cherokee To Discuss Roosters Not Raised For Food as Potential "Nuisances"

Cherokee Commissioners will weigh amending its ordinance to include the animals not used for food as potential nuisances.

The Cherokee County Commission will meet today and discuss whether the use of roosters for non-sustenance purposes could be considered a nuisance. The board will meet for its work session today at 3 p.m.and its meeting at 6 p.m. at the Cherokee County administrative offices in Canton. Sewer Rates, Bailey Compensation on Agenda

Water and Sewer rates may be upwardly adjusted during a future Canton City Council meeting, but discussion on the topic will begin Thursday evening.

The Canton City Council will look at a possible sewer and water rate increase and approving a settlement payout to a former Canton Police Department sergeant during their meeting this evening. Councilman Bill Bryan added a last-minute agenda item to the agenda, which deals with a possible 4.5 percent increase on water and sewer rates for the next five years.  The rates were last raised in June, 2011 by 30 percent.  A second important proposal before the board is the approval of the $107,000 settlement between the city and former police sergeant Stacy Bailey, who sued the city last year for alleged violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Earlier this week, both parties expressed satisfaction with the settlement. City attorney Robert …

Glen you know good and well that due to Canton's biennial election cycle and the resulting staggered terms of office, no matter when the raises are brought in there will always be some members of the council who will benefit financially from their own vote.   more ›

Both Sides React to Potential Bailey Settlement

Both Stacy Bailey's attorney and the City Attorney for Canton were pleased that a settlement was reached, but their agreements end there.

Pending approval from the Canton City Council on May 2, former Canton Police Department sergeant Stacy Bailey will receive $60,000 from the City of Canton to settle her lawsuit against the city for alleged violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act. If the council gives the final nod to authorize the settlement, Bailey will receive $30,000 in unpaid wages and $30,000 in damages. Stacy Bailey's Attorney Lance LoRusso said in a statement that his client was, "disappointed that she was not properly compensated for the many hours of overtime she worked, but she is glad that the defendants chose to resolve this lawsuit at this time." The statement also says that Bailey is saddened that the  City of Canton never insured itself against lawsuits …

Alpharetta Wants to Slow Down Cherokee Traffic

The city has proposed a project on Rucker Road that narrows travel lanes and sight lines to cut down speeding.

Alpharetta can't reduce the traffic from Cherokee County using the Rucker Road corridor, but the city can narrow traffic lanes and sight lines to slow those motorists down. "We can't make the traffic go away. I wish we could. It's not going to happen," said Assistant City Administrator James Drinkard, during the city's unveiling of a draft plan for Rucker Road. "Even if we stopped all growth in Alpharetta, which is not going to happen, Cherokee County is growing like crazy. And they're not going to stop." He said the neighboring county has a lot of growth potential but not a lot of jobs. The work is in Alpharetta and in Gwinnett County. And Cherokee County as plans to widen sections of GA 140. Residents in neighborhoods along Rucker Road …

Scott you've pointed out one of the main problems, over building and the fact that the roads in that area are years behind growth. I live in canton and have a son that plays at wills park and lives off of old Milton so I travel that route quite often. All roads lead to Rucker or mid broadwell and neither can accomodate the volume. And as you know, they've built 15 houses on every two acre plot. …   more ›

Patch Users Speak Out On SR 20

Readers respond to GDOT request for input.

Yesterday we told you about some public input meetings the Georgia Department of Transportation has planned regarding improvements to SR 20 from Canton to Cumming. Today, we let you know how readers from Canton and Cumming responded on Patch and our Facebook sites: On Canton Patch: How about they finish what they have started. The construction from Macedonia to Union hill has been going on forever. Recently, it doesn't appear that any work has been done. What is the hold up. The road is not currently safe to drive with all the temporary markings. Finish something sooner than later. I agree with above comment - this work has been going on for 3 years nearly and no one has been on the job since November of last year. My vehicle has been …
