Christian Askew was chosen to emcee a Tuesday night event that promoted writing and performance art.
Christian Askew, 14, was chosen out of thousands of Boys and Girls Club members across Atlanta to host the 27th annual Marel Brown Creative Writing Program at a packed Fox Theatre Tuesday night. Askew, a Teasley Middle seventh grader said he's always hanging out at the Malon D. Mimms Club in Canton. When he was approached to emcee the event, he said it would be a new experience that would move his education forward. "I just thought, 'This might be something that could go for a scholarship one day,'" Askew said. Askew is active in the Torch and Keystone leadership programs, a band percussionist, a performing artist and basketball player for the Georgia Hurricanes. His face hidden, former Canton Police Officer Daniel Henley told WSB-TV on Thursday night that he was caught in the middle of a conflict between City Manager Scott Wood and interim Canton Police Chief Vande Zande. Henley is the officer who resigned on Wednesday in the wake of intense scrutiny of a March 15 traffic stop involving Wood. Wood drove off that night with a warning for speeding and failing to maintain his lane. Henley turned off the audio toward the end of the stop, which is a violation of department policy. Henley told WSB-TV it was normal protocol in the Canton Police Department. "Vande Zande wanting to get the chief's position," he said. "That's all this is stemming from. Meet amateur photographer Bri Martelli, whose photo got the most votes in the Patch Spring Fling Photo Contest.
The Patch Spring Fling Photo Contest kicked off this month to start the warm weather season right. Readers submitted more than 240 photos, the best were picked out of the bunch and then you, the readers, cast the votes to decide which Patch had the photo that best captured the spirit of springtime. It's only fitting that today, the first official day of spring, we announce the winner -- Bri Martelli of Norcross! There were more than 800 votes cast. Martelli swept the contest with 280 votes -- about 34 percent of the total votes cast. Martelli, who is married with three children, submitted two photos of her 3-year-old daughter, Rose, playing with tulips in their front yard in Historic Norcross. The chief told the news media on camera that the police had a policy against turning the microphone off but could not provide a copy of that policy to them when they requested it.
