Walmart Heads To Holly Springs
The Arkansas-based business will start construction in spring 2013.
One of the world's biggest companies will build its fourth store in Cherokee County.
Walmart plans to build a 180,000-square-feet store and fuel center along Holly Springs Parkway near Interstate 575 at Exit 14. City Manager Rob Logan said the store will be located on the west side of Holly Springs Parkway, north of Pinecrest Road, and will be bordered by I-575 on the west.
The site, which is 30 acres, will also contain 30,000 square feet of retail space for businesses and additional stores, according to a press release from the city. Construction on the space will begin in spring 2013 and the facility could open sometime in 2014. Between 250 and 300 jobs are expected to come to the area.
"This is a very exciting announcement for our community," Mayor Tim Downing said in a statement. "Not only will it bring badly-needed jobs, but it will spur additional investment in nearby businesses."
The store will have its traditional line-up of items to offer customers, including general merchandise, groceries stocked with fresh fruits and vegetables, a bakery and deli, a pharmacy and a section on health-related products.
"Walmart has been a fixture in Georgia for over 30 years and is consistently recognized as a valued community partner," Downing continued. "The store will provide residents with an affordable and convenient place to shop and will be wildly popular. The timing of this project is perfectly timed and we are happy to welcome Walmart as our neighbor."
Walmart has three locations in Cherokee County: Bells Ferry Road in Towne Lake, on Highway 92 in Woodstock and on Ball Ground Highway in Canton.

when are we going to get some high end shops in Cherokee County? Are we going to be the discount center of Ga? Next thing you know we will be inundated with check casHing store fronts, pawn shops and title pawn shops. Enough. .Years ago, The Avenues of East Cobb was considering Cherokee County. What happened???

This is ridiculous. Couldn't they have put it out near Hickory Flat where there isn't already a Walmart? Do we really need one this close to the other three in the county? I think not.

they already have an empty building in woodstock next to home depot on hwy 92 then they built another one futher down 92 close to trickm road it takes up the land but it creates jobs they should pay more than 7.00 per hour look at how many stores they have an under pay the work's. can you live off of that income a month 40 X 7.00 if they let you get 40 hours per week higher prices on food, gas, housing, ect.,

Does anyone else have mixed feelings about this? I guess the added jobs are good but this one will be smack in the middle of the 3 that we already have and let's not forget that big eyesore that they left on the corner of Main Street and 92.

The first 3 comments are funny. People are SCREAMING for more jobs and they get MANY more jobs created with this walmart. Now you start complaining, REALLY??? Who cares if there are 10 walmarts in Cherokee County, and who cares if they are a discount store? These are jobs jobs jobs and great for the locals. I know the one in Canton is horrible and very difficult to get in and out of. The one in Woodstock is in the middle of of no where. This one will be located right by the interstate and will put the pressure on Kroger and Publix to lower some prices or move on. I for one am very excited about it and glad to see it. Now for those who want to scream for more jobs locally and then complain when they come, what would you suggest would make you happy?

I agree! The Walmart on exit 20 is a dump and I worry about my safety in the parking lot sometimes. The one on Eagle Drive & Bells Ferry is very nice but out of the way if you are traveling on 575...the same goes for the on 92 & Trickum....the new one will perfect and convenient.

We need another Walmart like we need a hole in the head. We already have a number of them around. What we need is a shopping experience where you actually can and want to go AND feel safe. We need more higher end shopping and opportunities for local businesses to sell their goods instead of another store to get more Chinese-made goods into circulation. I for one have not set foot into a Walmart in years and don't plan to change this.

Walmarts are trashy places. THey start out nice and like someone else said, it is a dump! What makes you think this one won't turn out the same way once it has been there for a few years. They attract the worst! I would love to see a high end mall too, it would also bring jobs. Thank God they are not putting in the Hickory Flat area! I never go to Walmart unless Target doesn't have what I need.

That store is a dump and I barely feel safe in the parking lot. I am no fan of Walmart either....I can count on one hand the number of times I go there per year...but yeah...it is a lot easier for the Holly Springs/Bridgemill/River Green folks...it will build up the surroundiing area...where is there a Wlmart without surrounding stores and restaurants....plus the new Outlet mall is going to invite non-local traffic....it is a good move for the local economy as a whole...more jobs and higher property values. I do understand what you say below about the "low prices coming at high costs". That is true...but at the same time many family have no choice in these times but to seek out those low prices.

I am no huge fan of Walmart...but this is GOOD NEWS, people! All of these are going to lead to new jobs...new store fronts, restaurants, hotels and medical offices are going to begin sprouting up and that will mean even MORE jobs...construction jobs, retail jobs, service industry jobs, government jobs and medical jobs. THIS IS GOOD! We should be rejoicing! Look around you at all of the contruction and thank your lucky stars that you are here in Cherokee County!

Liberals hate Walmart, with good reason,I might add.....but I can hold my nose in this case and declare my support because I am just happy to see some growth. And there are people who would love the jobs you say know one could live on! Maybe the people who aren't maxed out on their credit cards, living in a house they can't afford, driving a new fancy car, and shopping at high end stores just to impress people who they think give a crap, can live on Walmart wages. Yes, this is a good sign the economy is turning around. Obama can't fix a 8 year mistake in 3 1/2 years. And when your shopping in your high end stores, why don't you ask them where their products are made! They aren't made in America!

All WalMarts are identical. If one is a dump, what makes you think the next one won't be? Especially if they're only a few miles apart. NOBODY is thinking BIG PICTURE here. You mention construction jobs? Once the building is built, that's it. Construction jobs are over. Those are not long term, well paying, permanent jobs. Neither are the jobs that WalMart provides. Is everyone in Cherokee Country asleep? I've been in front of City Council beggin for bike lanes. NO was the answer. Too dangerous. No room. Too much money. Rediculous reasoning. Bike lanes will bring people. NOT WALMARTS. It's beyond exasperating. No worries. People like me won't stick around long. You'll get to continue living life as if it were 1950 for a long long time. Nothing progressive or positive or environmentally advantageous will happen here. Be assured of that.

Lets spend the tax payers money for bike lanes! They are dangerous on these county roads, they would cost the county a fortune to put in! How many people out there ask if the county has bikes lanes vefore they move here?!?! I guess you think bike lanes are more important then our schools, roads, water systems, parks etc.... Please get on your bike and leave then if you don't like it, Cherokee county doesn't need people like you!

Sarah you are either a very bitter former walmart employee or a rich snooty woman that can afford the designer stores. And of course you are one who wants all those things built, like "bike lanes" and parks but don't want anybody to have to pay for it except the tax payers. Wake up, there are many many many people who cannot afford to shop anywhere but Goodwill, WalMart, Costco, etc. Just check the parking lots of these and they are always full. But check those shopping malls with big designer stores and they are empty. Not to mention there are many folks around this area hurting for employment and will welcome that $8-$9 an hour opportunity. So instead of being the rich snoot complaining about not getting bike lanes to ride around on, realize not everybody in Cherokee County is a rich snoot!

No, not all stores are the same....some are cleaner and newer....some have better service and are better kept. This is true for any store, not just Walmart. Honestly, I don't think that YOU are thinking big picture. A bike lane will bring people here? A bike lane? I have nothing against bike lanes, I think they are great. But I think that most people have a greater need to eat and clothe themselves than to ride a bike. So I can see why the council might not have that high on the list. And we already have wonderful bike paths and parks for cyclists in Cherokee County. (Blankets Creek) And as far as construction jobs not being permanent...seriously? Do you KNOW any construction workers? Because I have not met one yet who expected any one project to be a permanent one. That is the nature of the industry. They build something and then move on to the next project. But while they are here "building", they patronize our stores and restaurants and they are able to support their families and make their mortgage payments. And as long as the area is stable and growing then there will always be another project. You never know, maybe it will be your new bike path...leading right up to the new Walmart! :)

Something else to consider ... studies show that WalMarts kill local jobs, especially Mom & Pops, and don't nearly replace the losses on anything like a 1:1 correlation. Also, they usually build where they can get Tax deferred status for a period of time (not contributing to the local tax base) and often move to a new tax-deferred location soon after the deferment expires. (See the comment above about how they will close the Canton WalMart as soon as they can get this new one built in Holly Springs.)

Most big box stores can have that effect on small businesses, not just WalMart. The surrounding business that are not competitors will thrive....dry cleaners, restaurants, beauty salons, etc. I mean, when have you ever seen a Walmart, Target, Home Depot, etc., that was not surrounded by other restaurants and businesses? Growth is growth. And even if the exit 20 store closed down, so what? I would think that one less Walmart would make you happy! The fact is that whole area is a big eyesore and there already is a number of vacant businesses in the surrounding area...so it could use some revitalization. With the continued growth in this area I have full confidence that eventually someone will invest in improving that area and something new will go up.

Why are we just now hearing about this? It seems everywhere else a Walmart has been proposed, the community has had time to rally either for or against it. I object to the fact that this seems to have been so sneakily put together. Whose palm was greased in order for this to happen without the community being informed? The article in the Ledger refers to us soon not having to "commute" all the way to other cities to get to big box stores. The six minute drive from Exit 14 ALL THE WAY up to Exit 20 is hardly a commute. The quotes in both this article and the one that appeared in the Ledger today are trying desperately to give this a positive slant. What about the simple fact that a Walmart cheapens the whole atmosphere of any city in which it is built? What about the fact that a gorgeous green space lining Exit 14 will be leveled? Now when we exit 575 at Exit 14 instead of a forested view, we'll be seeing the back of a big warehouse! Ooh, I can't wait to sit in a traffic jam looking onto loading docks! This whole thing seems like our neighborhood is taking a big step backwards. Instead of being known as the quaint little city in Cherokee County where the old train Depot is, Holly Springs can now be known as that little city up 575 where there's yet ANOTHER Walmart!

This has been in the works for a very long time, Wal-mart does not just buy a piece of property without studying the where, why and how.
