Update: Main Street Post Office Closing in September

All employees of the branch will transfer to the Riverstone Boulevard location.

The is facing one type of stamp they're not quite used to: the stamp of approval by the United States Postal Service for closure.

Michael Miles, spokesman for the Atlanta district of the USPS, said the branch is slated for closure by the end of September.

“The idea is to make this a transparent move,” Miles said.

He said the branch closing would not affect delivery, and that customers with a post office box downtown would retain their numbers, albeit at the . All employees of the branch will transfer to the other Canton location.

Miles said the closure is a cost-saving measure in light of decreased customer traffic, and that similar options are being considered at approximately two dozen other USPS locations around North Georgia.

“We find we don't need as many post offices as we once did,” Miles said.

Cherokee County Manager Jerry Cooper has not responded to a request for comment.
