Original Report Below 9:31 a.m. Thursday
At about 11 p.m. Wednesday, the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office responded to a shooting at 1094 Forest Creek Dr., just off Cumming Highway.
Jeff Coker, the 42-year-old homeowner, had been shot in the face as his wife and children slept upstairs, said Lt. Jay Baker, spokesman for the agency.
Investigators don't know who fired the shot, but Baker said Coker and his brother, 37-year-old Christopher Scott Coker, were downstairs and "the only ones awake at the home.
Preliminary findings indicate the brothers may have been drinking.
"At this time, detectives are trying to determine who had possession of the gun when it was fired," Baker said. "It's not known if it was an accidental discharge or if it was intentional. We don't know if they were wrestling over the gun or playing with the gun. There are reports that they were horseplaying. We don't know."
The older brother was flown to Atlanta Medical Center, where he is listed in critical condition.
"It's serious," Baker said. "Very serious."
Meanwhile, the younger brother, also of Canton, was arrested on charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and reckless conduct. Christopher Coker also had arrest warrants in Fayetteville and Henry County, Baker said.
