Police Hunting Attempted Child Abductor

The Cherokee Sheriff's Office responded to a call from a concerned parent on March 2 that a suspicious man chased three girls in a subdivision near BridgeMill.

UPDATE (11:30 a.m.): According to a Sheriffs Office press release, the incident occured on March 2 in the vicinity of Parc Drive in Canton, and involved three girls who were part of a birthday party scavenger hunt. The partygoers had split up into teams of three to go on the scavenger hunt. A man exited his vehicle near one of the teams, and chased after the girls. The girls ran into the woods, then returned to the party, where an adult called 911.

Detectives are comparing the description given by the girls with sex offenders that reside in the area.

ORIGINAL STORY: The Cherokee Sheriff's Office is on the lookout for a man who may be attempting to abduct children from the Canton area.

According to Lt. Jay Baker of the Sheriff's Office, a man who lives in a subdivision of Steels Bridge Road in Canton called authorities after his 11-year-old daughter and some of her friends were participating in a birthday scavenger hunt when a man jumped out of his vehicle and began chasing them.

Deputies responded to the call, but the man and his vehicle were nowhere to be seen.

The Liberty Elementary School PTA posted the following warning on its Facebook page:

Parents, we would like to make you aware of a situation going on in our area. There has been an attempted child abduction in the area. The suspected car has been seen in various places such as bus stops and gymnastics facilities. The car is a gray sedan with tinted windows...The suspect has gotten out of the car to chase children and attempted to grab individuals. Please be cautious and aware of your surroundings. Call 911 if you see any suspicious behavior. Please be sure that children are not at the bus stops alone in the morning or afternoon.

The suspect is being described as a white male in his late twenties or early thirties, of average build and height, and with dark hair. The man's car is described as a 2000s model silver, four door passenger car, possibly an Audi, Volkswagen Jetta, or Honda, with tinted windows and scratches and dents on the body. The last three numbers of the car's license plate may be 6-9-7.

Detectives are canvassing the area to provide the description of the suspect and his vehicle to residents. Anyone who sees the man or his car is urged to contact 911 immediately.

As a mom of a 5th grader who lives in that area, I have to ask why did it take almost a week to get out?

I've been pulled over twice for this because I am one of the unfortunate people that work overnights at my work. Trust me it's been out for a while. And according to the police I fit the description. And it's getting quite annoying being pulled over for it every time I'm coming home from a 10 hr overnight shift. You'd think after they've pulled me over twice they would have this in their system. I guess it's just one of those cases of cops having nothing else better to do at 4 am in the morning. I hope they catch this guy because he obviously has serious mental problems and that I'm tired of being pulled over when I'm tired at 4 in the morning when bust my butt at work all night and I've never done anything wrong with the law in my life. It's seriously getting stupid.

What time was this"scavenger hunt"? Was it at four a.m.? Why would they keep pulling you over when I'm sure the incident didn't happen at that time? I hope they catch him too, if it wasn't the over active imagination of pre-teens.

Is there any update on this case? Did they ever catch the guy? Do they think he's still in the area? I worry when we get these messages and then no update.

April,

I talked to the Sheriff's Office at 12:30 this afternoon and they told me they had no new information to share.

Best,

is anyone really surprised? they couldnt even find the body of the girl that was murdered 2 years ago. took the GBI and FBI to find the girl that was sitting in the dumpster "supposedly already checked" 60 feet from the scene.

Unless its a DUI, pot, or loitering. they dont care. couldnt find their butt with both hands if you helped them.

If you haven't already looked at it, you might want to take a few minutes and check out the Georgia Sex Offender Registry. My advice is to search by your ZIP code, and by any other nearby ones. I live in a rather upscale neighborhood, and there is a multiple-offender, aggravated child rapist from Texas registered here.

Here's the link:

Thanks for the link, Cogito Ergo Sum. After looking up the zip code I live...well...wow...there are way more than what I would have suspected.

dont forget to read what they got busted for. i saw atleast 2 people that were registered for statutory rape and the "men" in question look like they may have been 18-19. which means the girl could have been 17.

just saying.
