Patch Survey of GOP Leaders Shows Widespread Opposition to TSPLOST

Higher taxes and lack of trust are two reasons most Republican respondents are against the transportation referendum.

Georgia Republican leaders responding to a Patch survey overwhelmingly oppose TSPLOST in their regions and believe it will fail.

Patch sent surveys to about 135 Republican Party activists, candidates and officeholders last week asking their opinions about the referendum to raise sales taxes by a penny to fund road and transit projects. Just over 60 responded.

The referendum to create a Transportation Local Option Sales Tax, or TSPLOST, is split into 12 regional districts across Georgia, and the referendum could pass in one region and fail in others. The Republican leaders responding to Patch’s survey hail mostly from the Northwest, Northeast and Atlanta regions.

While the survey is unscientific and can’t be generalized beyond the respondents, those who replied were broadly opposed.

Forty-two of the respondents, almost 70 percent, said they are publicly opposing the referendum, with nine publicly supporting and 10 saying they are undecided. An even higher number, 46, said they planned to personally vote against the TSPLOST referendum. Twelve respondents said they would vote for it.

The responses were in line with a WSB-TV poll of Metro Atlantans showing that just 20 percent of Republicans support TSPLOST.

Forty-one of the Patch survey respondents, more than two-thirds, said they expect TSPLOST to fail in their regions. Only seven said they expect it to pass. Thirteen were unsure.

The Republican respondents offered several reasons for opposing the referendum, from the added tax burden to questions about its constitutionality. Some in the Metro Atlanta region don't want money from their communities used to fund transit projects in town. Others expressed an overall lack of trust in the state to follow through on its promises.

"TSPLOST would be the greatest tax increase in Georgia history," said one respondent. "It sets up new government bureaucracy. It shifts money from taxpayers of counties to others. Nobody really knows where the money will go. It is a bailout for a failing MARTA system."

Added another: "TSPLOST is a tax increase that will send a large sum of money outside of my community. Georgia taxpayers work too hard for their money to have the state spend it on projects of questionable value."

Those supporting the referendum said it was the only way currently available to address Georgia's dire transportation needs.

"Georgia has under-invested in transportation improvements since the 1980s," one supporter said. "T-SPLOST will provide necessary funds to improve transportation regionally and within indivdual counties. If we want Georgia to see economic growth and development, we must invest in our transportation system."

Another Republican supporter said: "[I]t takes some of the burden off of our residents, especially property owners who pay property tax, and shifts it to the population of the region as a whole and includes visitors paying sales tax."

What do you think? Will TSPLOST pass? Should it? Tell us in the comments below this article.

How ironic...in a state controlled by Republicans at all levels of government, a voter referendum passed by republicans isn't supported by the majority of party leader. Question then becomes, why the heck is it even on the ballot.

Many people are claiming that there are no other options for funding road improvements, however, they could increase the gas tax or increase the income tax a fraction of a percent. But no, increasing taxes is bad. Let the people increase their own taxes instead.

Good ol' Chipper pulled a fast one! Pushing through the T-Splost, then when it receives a huge backlash, he claims that the DOT sent it. Hey idiot (you Mr Rogers)! The DOT doesn't pass bills or send us referendums - YOU DO! You did! Now, you're asking us to vote no - to vote against you.

You're a disgrace to public service, a half-truth teller (hotel/sports betting) and we'll all be better off when Mr. Beach represents us. Mainly because he is not you.

Looking forward to voting against you in July 31st.

Dems and Independents, you can vote on the Republican ballot in this primary since Georgia doesn't register voters by party. Just ask for the Republican ballot when you go vote.

If moderate Republicans, Democrats and Independents work together, we can vote Chip and his cronies out and save our schools from the for-profit charter school folks...Vote for Beach, Read, Cromer, and Jordan.

Vote for anyone BUT the liberal tax&spend, status-quo cronies Read, Jordan, & Cromer. They are Board Puppets and Dr P sycophants. They have no new ideas whatsoever and are consistent only in their insistence that none of 'em can do anything to rein in out-of-control CCSD spending. Higher Taxation for Cherokee County residents is their only plan. Many insiders close to Cromer know she is a stealth Planned Parenthood advocate, which is why she was asked that in the debate. Read's a dishonest candidate, claiming 're-elect' to a position she does not hold. Neither candidate cares a bit about our county's dismal HS 75% grad rate and neither has any idea nor interest in fixing this. They only care about shoveling more tax $$$ to Dr. P and his chauffeur.

Beach's main concerns are his hometown of Alpharetta and Fulton County. He cares not about Cherokee, thus his T-SPLOST advocacy, which will also net him millions in taxpayer profits.

Vote Rogers, Dukes, Cochran, and Marlow and run those liberal Democrat union loving thugs out of town!!

I love how you invalidate one 'slate' of representation and then promote another. What are Dukes, Cochran and Marlow if not 'Rogers sycophants'? Your hypocrisy is astounding and I look forward to each of your posts because they provide new insight into your ignorance. Keep 'em coming!!!

So it's OK for Frank Jones to invalidate one 'slate' of representation but not for me?

Look up the definition of the word 'hypocrisy' and you'll see a picture of 'Clark' beside it. Do you seriously even bother to read what you post, much less comprehend?

I'm glad you enjoy my posts. I don't enjoy yours - Unlike Frank, you bring absolutely nothing to the table and are honestly a boor.

Remember Clark: Best to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. You remove all doubt everytime you post here.

It would be hypocrisy if I suggested voting for a slate, which I didn't. I suggest that people educate themselves on each candidate as an individual and see what they bring to the table.

It's ironic that you'd end your post with the 'fool' quote.

Clark, you're a hypocrite because you insult me for 'single slate' rather than Frank Jones - the poster who started it.

It's OK when your side of the debate does it though. It's that behavior that makes you hypocritical. Your failure to understand the definition of the word doesn't change the definition of the word. The rest of your posts simply reveal your ignorance and naivete, neither of which can be helped, I suppose.

    Steely -

Had you taken the time to reply to Frank, perhaps the intent of your post would have been clearer. But, you didn't, so we are all left scratching our heads at exactly what your point is. Nothing new there.

Clark, I saw no need to Reply to Frank. I did use his "Vote for my slate of reps" as a template of my response. We've already established your big fat hypocrisy (and now cluelessness) on that.

It's clear that the only dimwitted bulb to not get the intent of my response is you. No surprise there. It appears there's a permanent loss of power between your ears.

When will you EVER bring any sort of discussable opinion to anywhere on the Patch? While I disagree with her, I tip my cap to Holly J for bringing a different opinion into this thread and discussing it civilly. And while I nearly-always disagree with my good buddy Frank, he at least brings something to the table.

You seem to live in an intellectual gutter, feeding off the small scraps of what everyone else posts while contributing absolutely nothing to the discussion in return.

Yes,SD, much better to vote for Rogers' puppets. That's a MUCH better option, as we've seen with these many years of Chip's alleged representation of our district. (Please note the intense sarcasm).

And again with the PP issue? What in the sam hill does that have to do with a school board position? I have NEVER heard a whisper of anyone wanting to do anything regarding PP in the schools. ALTHOUGH, in my opinion, giving kids information and access to birth control is the ONLY way to break the cycle of poverty the comes with most teenage pregnancies. And before your head explodes, Steely, yes, I believe that the PARENTS should be the ones providing this information. Sadly, many don't or won't. As with so many other social ills- from healthy eating to dressing appropriately and on and on- it falls to the schools to step in and be parents when the parents abdicate their responsibilities. And then be crucified for doing it.

What the PP issue has to do with this is that it's proof that Kyla Cromer is a diehard liberal tax&spend Democrat..and NOT a Republican. Yet, she doesn't have the guts to run as a Democrat. The woman is a political coward.

All the more reason that school board elections should be non-partisan. I have never elected a SB member on the basis of his/her party affiliation. In fact, the education of our children should be above petty party ideologies and B.S. There is nothing inherently Republican or Democrat about education. It has been cast in these roles by outsiders- i.e. "teachers are all Democrats because they are union" (not in GA, but yet it still comes up) Not a single teacher I knew when I taught was in the profession due to their political leanings. No one who claims to be working for the education of our children- from teachers to the school board- should be doing so in order to pursue their own political agenda.

So, you can't be a Republican and see that PP provides low income women access to healthcare. Wow, how big is that tent anyway? It is exactly that dogmatic, no room for differing opinions, "you must believe EVERYTHING we say" attitude of the GOP that revolts me. It makes it obvious that loyal member of the GOP do not want to think for themselves They want the Party to tell them what to think. Ever read "1984"? Put down "Atlas Shrugged" and take a look at what Orwell has to say about not thinking for yourself.

Your point is taken, Holly. But the fact remains that the GOP is a Pro Life party, not a Planned Parenthood one. Until that changes, any candidate who is a PP supporter doesn't belong in the Republican party. There's plenty of room in the Democratic party for those types of people.

    Holly J

Do you honestly believe that EVERY member of the GOP is anti-abortion? I don't believe that any thinking person can be a member of any group and agree 100% with everything that group believes unless they are a sheep and just want to be told what to do. .

And while were traipsing down this primrose path, can we not get past the idea that all that PP does is abortions? Did you not learn anything from the Susan G. Komen fiasco? PP provides, to any woman but primarily to low income women who don't have insurance, breast exams, wellness exams, as well as birth control so that an abortion will NOT be necessary. Abortions are around 3% of the services PP provides. These services keep women healthy and prevent unwanted pregnancies that wind up costing all of us in welfare expenses. Seems like the GOP would be all for that, being as they are so big into "personal responsibility"- at least in theory.

Again, this isn't about what either of us believes. This is about what constitutes the GOP platform.....and Planned Parenthood most certainly does not. A candidate who therefore endorses PP isn't worthy of having an (R) beside their name. (D) is more suitable. Given her complete lack of ideas and total disregard for fiscal conservatism, (D) is certainly more appropriate, not that she's brave enough to do so.

Steely Dan it is really unfortunate that you have not researched these two candidates accurately. I find it incredibly irresponsible that you make these false accusations of Kyla Cromer based on a twisted question asked of her at her debate (to which her answer was clear, she does NOT believe PP has a place in our schools), I was there and it was not asked her position on the Right to Life issue (which she has clarified) . I have known Ms. Cromer and worked closely with her for MANY, MANY years. I have NEVER known her to be an advocate for Pro-Life nor a supporter of Planned Parenthood. I DO KNOW that she has continuously encouraged Cherokee county residents to SHOP CHEROKEE, she volunteers and advocates tirelessly for the children, students, future of our county and SHE voted AGAINST OBAMA AS A REPUBLICAN in our last Presidential election. Sources close to her opponent tell us Ms. Marlow did not...she committed the ultimate Republican No-No and helped put Obama in office, voting DEMOCRAT...checkthat out and GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT MR. DAN!

Anne Reed: " I have NEVER known her (Cromer) to be an advocate for Pro-Life..."

Yeah, that's exactly the problem - thanks for typing it clearly.

I'm just curious why a moderator would choose the PP question to ask of Cromer at the debate. Where there's smoke, there's fire!

I've not seen the voting records of any candidate- have you? I didn't know the voting history shows the person they voted for. Does it? Last I checked, it just shows what elections one has voted in before. If not, then I am curious who these 'sources' are? Did these 'sources' accompany Marlow & Cromer into the voting booth? Isn't that illegal, if not a tad creepy? If there's any truth to that, why didn't Cromer ask Marlow this at the debate? More political cowardice by Cromer?

Honestly, this sounds like some ol' fat Bitter Betties making up some tall tales to me. That Cromer campaign must be getting desperate. Kind of like Beach's Robo Call nonsense this past weekend. No thanks Brandon - I'm voting for Chip and against your TSPLOST! Go back to Alpharetta, Mr. Fulton County!!

Why is the GOP so focused on the abortion issue??? So what if Kyla Cromer hasn't ever held a stupid sign at the Capitol to protest Roe v. Wade?? So what if Kelly Marlow did? IT DOESN'T HAVE ONE SINGLE THING TO DO WITH BEING ON THE SCHOOL BOARD!!!! I don't care if the candidates are D or R or I or any other freakin' letter of the alphabet beside their names! The only people for whom this is an issue are those who vote only based on party and not on the candidates themselves. Those are the worst kind of voters- sheep who do what the Party tells them and don't think for themselves.

    2. No, obviously voter records are NOT public record it was a statement made to an acquaintance years ago...guess officially a rumor. You understand those, I am sure!
    3. Cromer campaign is extremely confident and tired of people like you trying to twist words and smear those who wish to serve the people, not themselves. It seems you are the desperate one.
