Orphaned Baby's Dad Had Blood Alcohol Level 3X the Legal Limit

The 2-month-old boy was injured in a Feb. 5 wreck that killed his parents and shut down Knox Bridge Highway, just west of Fields Landing Drive.

The had a blood alcohol level "slightly less than three times the legal limit in Georgia," the spokesman for the said today.

Rick Dean Headen's blood alcohol level was .218, Lt. Jay Baker said. The legal limit in Georgia is .08.

Headen, 48, was driving eastbound along Knox Bridge Highway on Feb. 5 with his 2-month-old son and the child's mother in tow.

The Sour Lake, TX, residents were "apparently just passing through, on their way to another state" when the gold Ford Focus that Headen was driving crossed the center line and struck a red Dodge pickup truck headed westbound, Baker said on the day of the accident. 

The head-on collision and killed his parents, Headen and 40-year-old Charlotte Ann Sedtal.

The driver and the passenger in the red Dodge truck were also injured. Both women were transported to  in Marietta, the driver with possible fractures to her lower extremities and the passenger with neck and back pain. 

As investigators processed the scene, they found , Baker told Canton-Sixes Patch last month. Headen's blood was taken and submitted to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab.

Today, after announcing the lab's findings, Baker said the , who was transported to  in Sandy Springs with a "traumatic" brain injury as well as a broken leg after the accident, was released to one of his dad's relatives. He is currently in Florida.

"Their baby should make a full recovery from injuries he suffered in the accident," Baker said.
