On This Date in History: On March 14, 1757, British Admiral John Byng was executed by firing squad for "failing to do his utmost" to prevent the French from capturing the British-held island of Minorca the previous May. Although there was widespread public support for Byng, who was seen as a scapegoat, King George II refused to pardon the admiral and his death sentence was carried out on the HMS Monarch.
