5. On This Date in History: On March 15, 44 B.C., a group of aristocratic Roman Senators met with Dictator for Life Julius Caesar in the Theatre of Pompey in Rome, which was serving as a temporary home for the assembly. While one senator pleaded with the dictator for the return of his brother from exile, Publius Servilius Casca stabbed Caesar in the neck. Though it was only a glancing blow that Caesar was able to dodge, the remaining senators set upon him with daggers drawn. After being stabbed 23 times, including wounds from his close friend Marcus Junius Brutus, Caesar fell dead. The assassination set in motion a chain of events that would topple the Roman Republic, give birth to the Roman Empire, and mark a watershed moment in Western History.
