Police Group Backs David Waters
Waters is challenging the incumbent, Cherokee County Sheriff Roger Garrison.
The Fraternal Order of Police endorsed David Waters for Cherokee County Sheriff.
Waters is challenging the incumbent, Sheriff Roger Garrison.
On a message on the group's website, Lodge 13 will back Waters, along with Vic Reynolds for Cobb County District Attorney, Reuben Green for Cobb County Superior Court Judge, Van Pearlberg for Cobb County Superior Court Judge and Marsha Lake for Cobb County State Court Judge.
Lodge membership is made up of law enforcement officers from Cherokee and other nearby jurisdictions, and the endorsements aim to reflect the interests of those officers.
Garrison announced his bid for re-election in January. Waters announced his bid in September.

thank god for David Waters!!!! 20 Yrs of garrison's police state, and wasted tax dollars, is TOO LONG!!!!
He sells essential needs to the inmates "socks, shirts, and TP," when they should be given!! "yes the commissary in the jail IS OWNED BY GARRISON!!! and he has a personal retirement fund of 2.5Mil laid out for himself "not his working 401K, or IRA........" Weird how a podunk county sheriff can get that kind of money....
He also has 1 supervising officer on duty for every 2 officers........ thats like going to a wendy's and asking to see a manger and they have 3 on duty for the six employees... at what point are the employees crap, or the managers crap.....

Amen!!!!!!!! You couldn't be more right. I saw the billboard that read "The Sheriff we know and trust" and nearly crashed my truck the other day. The only thing we trust from Garrison is for him to throw the former Canton Police Chief under the bus to save his own skin instead of taking responsibility for the actions or better yet inactions of his incompetent deputies. We haven't forgotten about that Roger. We're ready for some change and you out of office is long overdue!!

Indeed the Cherokee Sheriffs Office is in dire need of new and competent leadership. Anyone who has followed the course of the Sheriffs Office over the years has to realize the need. Roger's time is over.
In past elections no serious credible candidate has gone against Roger and he has had things entirely his way.
Let's hope that is over.

How ignorant. A county of 200,000 is hardly PODUNK. As far as the jail, who cares if the inmates have to pay for their stuff THEY ARE IN JAIL SWINDLING TAXPAYERS OUT OF MONEY. Maybe if they would get their acts together, grow up and stop tattooing their necks like a bunch of idiots, they can become respectable members of society. Until they they can pay for their stay in the jail. I for one am voting for Garrison, he has overseen the explosive growth in Cherokee County and has done a great job on it.

First of all I am not a lady, so get off of that. Second of all THE INMATES DESERVE WHAT THEY GET. Haven't you seen the mugshots on here? There are a bunch of people that are obviously over 25 years old that haven't gotten their act together, still smokin dope, acting like a bunch of teenagers and they end up in jail DUE TO THEIR OWN IDIOCY and you complain about toilet paper and underwear and that they have to buy this? Let me tell you something - I pay taxes for these LOSERS to continue to smoke their dope and do their meth and go to court and get thrown in jail on MY DIME. So why don't you go back and visit your little friends in jail and stop complaining about them paying for their own toilet paper. Last time I checked TP was 4 rolls for a dollar. Freaking give me a break.
You are ignorant because Cherokee is far from 'podunk' - Like I said 200,000 people is hardly podunk - this is a major metropolitan suburb and you need to either get with the program or go further up in the hills where it truly is podunk.
Thirdly I am sick and tired of you sitting here talking about some money that Roger Garrison has stashed away. Where is your proof? WHERE IS IT? Either put up or shut your mouth. BTW I love how you signed your comment. That's really classy.....'dipshit?' really?

As for very one in the mug shots being 25 and up..... WRONG. At 16 you are charged as an adult in Ga. Learn the law.
As for te stuff the inmates need, That's just it my tax dollars are suppose to provide that stuff, not provide Harrison with it to resell to the inmates.

And yes for every 1.5 officers there is a supervising officer. Whether it be Wendy's or any other example, If you need a supervisor per employee there is an issue. Either wants to pay people double for nothing, or there is an issue in management.

The bottom line is that Garrison has had the office too long and has become a dictator. Re-election will only turn the dictator into a tyrant.

I think Cherokee County is Ready for Change. We need new Law Enforcement Supervision at the County Level. There are some great guys and gals at the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office and they deserve to not have to live in fear everyday. They deserve to know that if a mistake is made they are not going to be thrown under a bus a run over a few times by the "big" boss.
See the link below for a news release where the Sheriff questioned the abilities of the City of Canton's former police chief's leadership and where he discussed the punishment of his own officers.

I find it perplexing that Sheriff Garrison was out celebrating at a time when he should have been on scene providing leadership during the recent fatal shooting of a teenager; since he is quick to openly condemn other Police execitives for the same behavior? Where was he during this incident? He spends hundreds of thousands of dollars on robots, communications equipment, and protective gear yet sends negotiators into harms way escalating an already volatile situation. Not very sound tactical strategy.

The FOP Is not a union. It is an organization of sworn law enforcement officers. The link below describes their mission.
http://www.fop.net/about/faq/index.shtml
The FOP is just like any other organization that a professional could join that coinsides with their job. The FOP is just like the Sheriff's Association which our current sheriff belongs to.
There are a number of officers that work and live in Cherokee County that belong to the Cobb County FOP. They want to belong to a FOP and there is not a Cherokee County Chapter
David

The FOP is NOT considered a union in Georgia because of the fact that law enforcement has no right to collective bargaining rights in Georgia. However, the FOP IS a union and would love to be one in Georgia. Do your research. Nation-wide the FOP participates in collective bargaining as an official union in many of those states which do support collective bargaining rights for police.
Here are just a few examples.
Official Police Union in Chicago=FOP www.fop.org
Official Police Union in Washington DC = www.fop-mpd.com
Official Police Union Baltimore Maryland = FOP www.fop3.org
Official Police Union Philadelphia = FOP - http://www.fop5.org
The FOP is listed on www.unions.org as a union
http://www.unions.org/unions/fraternal-order-of-police/national/78
They are a union - no matter what anyone claims - and anyone wanting to be the Chief Executive Officer of any law enforcement agency should know the difference between management and labor.

I think we should use this forum for important issues and not personal ones. We have a Sheriff's Department with a large number of highly paid ranking people and nobody is quite sure what they do. We have increasing crime, particularly buglary. As for the teen sniper shooting, I am more concerned about the media silence. It appears our sheriff and local media outlets think this case is over. When Cherokee tax payers are faced with paying out Million$ to settle the coming wrongful death suit maybe the silence will be broken.

If Sheriff Garrison has a business selling supplies and products to the inmates, I believe that would be a conflict of interest unless the contract was put out to bid and evaluated by an independent group. I'd like to know more if anyone has info.
Per review of the county tax website, Mr. Garrison purchased a home for $528,100 in 2005 (a pricey home for a public servant). The interesting thing is that his tax assessment is now only $365,300 which is 69.2% of the 2005 purchase price. Other homes purchased in the same period and price range are now assessed at 78-82% of their 2005 purchase prices. My home is roughly 80% of its 2005 assessed value. Make me wonder how/why his home is 10-12% lower than the rest of us.
Sheriff Garrison has a charity that collects $55,000 to $65,000 per year. Of the money collected, $35,000 to $48,000 (65% to 76%) is spent for "fundraising activities" while roughly 30% is spent for "charitable donations". What's the nature of the "fundraising" expenses and to whom are the amounts paid? A net 30% charitable purpose is too low.

I heard that many prominent members of the Cobb FOP wrote a letter in support of Sheriff Garrison and denouncing the FOP Lodge's decision to back Waters. One prominent member of the lodge told me that the lodge didn't vote to back waters - it was done by their 'fearless leader' President Bill Mull who has been promised a job as a major if waters is elected. Supposedly when the issue of who to support was brought up to the lodge, it was tabled until Sheriff Garrison could respond to the Lodge's invitation to address them. Roger says that he never got an invitation and no one has been able to produce a letter of invitation. Now it makes sense - and Mull is not the only person who has been promised favors for support by Waters. One pawn/gun shop in Cherokee has been told that if they would put a waters sign up on their property, waters would replace all car shotgun mounts and purchase them through this shop. That sounds typical. Garrison 2012 all the way!

Thank you to Mr. Mull for coming forward. After the Sheriff's completely uncalled for attack on David Waters and his church I'm sure there is desperation over his poor decision. What the Sheriff said in his news paper ad caused me to stop in awe. To condemn a man for being married five times is politics. To condemn his church is a tactic that only the anti religious leftest would use. I believe that the more people who read it will see the character of somebody who is looking down upon others. That trait has come to opitimize career out-of-touch elected officials.
Common Sense
9:52 pm on Wednesday, July 25, 2012
Rico, here you are misleading the good public AGAIN. Sheriff Garrison only stated facts (something you are not familiar with). This ad never condemned Mr. Water’s church, Sheriff Garrison only stated where Mr. Water’s said he went to church. The ad also states that Mr. Waters has been married 5 times. I think the personal life of a candidate is very important. This lets the voting public make there own judgment as to the character of this person. I think a commit such as marriage is very important, it shows a persons willingness to stability, loyalty, trustworthiness and to be able to stand by your vows or oath to one person. Just as important as the oath you take when you become a law enforcement officer, to protect and serve the public. Some people take marriage lightly and sometimes it takes one or two marriages to find the right person but in my opinion a 54-year-old person being married 5 times is a liability.
Rico, with a bad reputation like yours on the PATCH, you of all people to talk about someone else’s character and looking down on others is nothing more a joke.

First of all I personally sent letters to Sheriff Garrison and Mr. Waters oulining the Lodge's intention to endorse one of the candidates for Sheriff. In the letter (which our Lodge Lawyer, Mr. Lance LaRusso, has a copy), we set out the date and time for our meeting to discuss and vote on the endorsement. Mr Waters came and addressed the membership and since Sheriff Garrison elected not to attend, we had a nomination to endorse Mr. Waters for Shereiff of Cherokee County.I have heard there has been all sorts of comments regarding our endorsement such as we are a union and we plan or bringing this to Cherokee County. This is totally false information and we are a fraternal organization that supports Police Officers in many ways. BUT WE'RE NOT A UNION. Mr. Rico,
I don't interpret Roger Garrison's ad as an attack on Mr. Waters church. It seems more like a statement of fact. He also listed Medals of Honor for his opponent. Garrison must be proud of his church affiliation and chose not to slight the membership of Mr. Waters. Your words seem harsh for what is printed.
The comment about being married 5 times may not have been necessary but it does make a valid comparison about commitment.
David
7:20 am on Friday, July 27, 2012
I totally agree that Mr. Garrison was merely stating the facts, I think that he wanted to list his affiliations with his own church and did not want to infer that Mr. Waters was not a member of a church, so he just listed it there. I did not take it as derogatory towards any church whatsoever. Someone 'looking' for something bad to say or someone with thin skin may take it that way, but I don't think it was intended to be a slight.

First of all you Garrison supporters don't need to worry about what I say or think. Be concerned with the hundreds of people that will interpret the ad as an attack on that Church. I agree with you Rico, perception is reality and the reality of it is that Garrison does not respect those that do not march lock step with him. He displayed that by his "No-Show" for the Republican Women's Forum last Wednesday night at the Bluffs. But before that his disrespect for others was revealed when he was a defendant in a Sexual Harrassment class action law suit in which Cherokee County paid out $75K for his involvement. But even before that he tried to get me fired for supporting David Waters, which is a clear violation of my Consitutional Rights. But the first indication of his disdain for others and their rights was the KKK photos and his trying to make it out to be a joke. Roger, there IS a joke in all of this, and those of us who can think clearly know the joke. All will be revealed on the evening of July 31, 2012.

As far as I and probably lots of others, we have no way of knowing whether it is a big church or small church. I am not even sure why people would even think this is an attack. I would be more concerned with the five time married statement that the one about his church membership.

Try explaining all that to a group of sweat little ole church going ladies who were offended by the remark. I myself grew up in a small country church and understand how people think about such things. But I don't really have anything else to say about this. Richie Haris made the best point. Garrison didn't have the courage to show up at the forum and he didn't even send someone on his behalf like others did. Whether the Ledger Ad had anything to do with it I don't know. Bottom line is he didn't show and I think that's a whole lot more important than who yall think I am or what I previously had to say.

If people get upset over someone publicly saying that they attend a different church from others, then that is a sad state of affairs IMO. It is called freedom to worship and little ole sweaty women should realize that we can worship wherever and whenever we choose. Now if the Sheriff had said my church is bigger and better than your church - nana nana boo boo, then that might be a problem but he did nothing to that effect. IMO it is just one more petty thing that the supporters of Davd Waters are using to try to stir the pot. Stick with the issues please - it is what both candidates should be doing.

I agree with sticking with the issues so please read my post dated July 29, 2012, Sunday, 2:40 PM. The issue is Garrison does not respect those who do not agree with him and the FACTS I posted show just that, or am I missing something?

And while we are on the subject of political ads, lets get the whole truth out there not just something used once again to mislead the voters. I.E. David Waters ad I received in today's mail saying that the county paid out $75,000 for a sexual harrassment suit against Roger Garrison. The part that it was against another sheriff named in the lawsuit was conveniently left out. Give me a break, lets put the full blame on Garrison and forget Bo Ballard was Sheriff at the time. I guess we are all supposed to be gullible about these half truths. Wating to see what other dirt is going to be dug up that people who have lived in this county for a while already knew about. At this point it is almost becoming funny!

Ballard, Garrison (who was a sergeant at the time) and two others were named in the law suit, by three female employees, for Sexual Harrassment. I guess Garrison's no- show at the forum was the smartest thing for him because I'm sure somebody would've asked about the suit.
