Cherokee Black History Exhibit Debuts

These are the members of the Ralphe Bunche High School class of 1965. Before desegregation, Ralph Bunche was the only place where the county's African Americans could be educated.

1. The Cherokee County School District will hold its annual Signing Day ceremony at the Northside Hospital-Cherokee Conference Center at 9:45 a.m. today. The county's top athletes will officially ink scholarship offers to the college or university of their choice. Check back later for updates.
2. To kick off Black History Month, Canton-Sixes Patch sat in on a speech from former Ralph Bunche principal Frankie Shepherd. Watch as Shepherd explains the history of the school, which served Cherokee's African American community at one time.

If you're looking for Black History Month events around Cherokee County, consider stopping by the Cherokee County History Museum and Visitors Center site Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For information on the free exhibit, go to cherokeecountyhistorymuseum.com.
4. Kit Sanders, a sophomore biology major from Canton, and Lauren Tomlinson, a junior biology major from Waleska, were inducted into Reinhardt University's Beta Beta Beta (Tri-Beta) national honor society for undergraduate biology majors, school spokeswoman Lauren Thomas said.
5. The Unchained Tour, intended to encourage people to buy their books from independent stores rather than chains, will roll through Canton. Storytellers and musicians will be performing at the Cherokee Arts Center at 7 p.m. Feb. 9.
