Bicyclist Struck by Truck Dies

The man was struck near the Canton Marketplace on Jan. 5.

The man who was struck by a truck while riding his bicycle on Cumming Highway two weekends ago has passed away, friends of the man say.

Louis "Bud" Phillips, 66, died from his injuries on Jan. 14, nine days after being struck by a Chevrolet pick up truck traveling westbound on Cumming Highway near the Interstate 575 on-ramp. Phillips was life flighted to Kennestone Hospital, where he was in a coma on life support in the Intensive Care Unit until his passing.

The driver of the truck did not flee the scene and was not charged with a crime for hitting Phillips, according to the Canton Police Department.

Friends of Phillips are organizing the Louis 'Bud' Phillips Memorial Ride to pay their last respects to their fallen comrade and to raise awareness of the accident and driver-bicyclist cooperation on the roads.

The event is still being planned, but will be held on Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. and start at Free-Flite Bicycles Riverstone. Event planners are working on setting up a 20-25 mile route that will take the procession by the site where Phillips was struck.

Event organizers are also attempting to get a law enforcement escort for their ride.

Bud truly was one of the nicest people I've ever known - always friendly and smiling, always willing to lend a hand - the perfect neighbor. I'll always remember Bud pulling out of his driveway and taking off down the street on his bike for another ride. We miss you very much, Bud.
