'A Landmark for Years to Come'
Ground was broken Tuesday for the Cherokee County Aquatic Center, which is slated to open in spring 2013 off Sixes Road.
Members of the community including mayors, county commissioners and those directly involved in the design and construction of the aquatic center gathered off Gresham Parkway to break ground this afternoon.
The $15.7 million recreational center is slated to open spring 2013.
The complex off Sixes Road will be comprised of a 48,000 indoor facility, and an 18,000 square foot outdoor leisure pool and deck area. The center will include an indoor 50-meter competition pool with spectator seating for 700; an indoor 25-yard recreational pool with warmer water for therapy, exercise and instruction; two indoor poolside classrooms and party rooms; a spacious lobby; and seating areas with pool overlook. The outdoor leisure pool will include features such as an aquatic play structure, water cannons, a zero-depth entry area with geysers and deck sprays, a current channel and basketball hoops. A concession stand, generous locker rooms and family restrooms will serve both the indoor and outdoor facilities.
The facility will have five full-time employees, as well as part-time staff, such as lifeguards and water safety instructors.

An expensive landmark that will be a taxpayer burden for years to come. This is a better title. We're broke according to the commission, but we can afford this?

I for one am very excited about this. It's about time we had someplace to swim year round. I'm so tired of our SD raking us over the coals in HOA fees for a pool to only be open 3 months. At least their indoor one will be year round.

Three aquatic centers/indoor pools within 16 miles of each other...ridiculous. Canton's YMCA is a debt nightmare for us (thanks to He Who Must Name Everything After Himself), and now the county has decided that they want tons of debt, too!
More money down the drain...

Can't wait for this to open! The YMCA is a joke, it shouldn't even have the YMCA logo anywhere near it it's so expensive. We voted for this years ago and we can't wait to finally have our aquatic center!
