2010 Census: Canton Grew Nearly 200 Percent

Over the last decade, Canton went from a small town to a burgeoning city.

More than 15,000 people moved to Cherokee's county seat during the last decade, according to U.S. Census figures released today.

In 2000, Canton only had 7,709 residents. The city's population now stands at 22,958–a nearly 200 percent change.

With such a dramatic shift, it's no surprise that Cherokee County is now home to 214,346 residents, which is 72,443 more people than in 2000.

But the growth wasn't big enough for Cherokee to crack the top five list of most populous Georgia counties.

Fulton remains the state's largest county. Its 920,581 residents topped Gwinnett (805,321), DeKalb (691,893), Cobb (688,078) and Chatham (265,128) counties.
